How To Remove Spyware From Your PC

You may or may not have some suspicion that spyware is operating on your computer. If you do have some suspicion, or you know for sure, it is important that you remove that spyware right away, before your security or privacy is comprised or your computer becomes unable to function properly. If you're not sure whether or not you have spyware on your computer, at the very least do some sort of scan to make sure.

Usually, your first indication of being infected with spyware is a window that pops up showing you a bunch of advertisements. If this were all that were happening, then spyware would just be an annoyance, but in reality, there is much more going on than you can actually see. Most spyware is designed to hack your computer so that you cannot shut off those ads, to track your online activities, and to open the door for other spyware programs to install themselves.

As a result, your computer will usually have more than one type of spyware infection. All of these spyware programs will fight to change the settings on your computer in their favor. This can, and usually will, result in your computer becoming unstable and eventually, to stop function altogether. This is why it is so important that you get some kind of spyware scanning and removal software on your PC and use it regularly.

Spyware programs usually infect your computer via your Internet browser, usually Microsoft's Internet Explorer, though other browsers can also be susceptible to this kind of exploitation. Adding links to your bookmarks and changing your default homepage are some of the least harmful things that can be done. Sometimes the spyware installs complete hacks to add hidden links into web pages that you daily browse. This slows down your computer and your browser a lot.

Here are some things you can do to fight spyware:

  • Internet Explorer is, by far, the most common route for spyware to infect your computer. By installing and using Firefox, you can decrease the chance of spyware infections dramatically.
  • Amazingly enough, some spyware programs actually show up in the add/remove software listing in your Windows control panel. If this is the case, you can simply remove those spyware infections by uninstalling them from your computer, though it is entirely possible that the spyware may only say that it has been unistalled.
  • Unfortunately, most spyware infections are very difficult, if not impossible, to remove from your computer. The only way to be completely sure the spyware has been removed is to install and use a quality spyware removal program. After that, you should install and use a quality antispyware monitoring program to prevent further infection. Often, these two types of programs come bundled in the same software package.
