Antispyware Tools - Know What Your Getting

There are a lot of antispyware tools available on the market today. Some are good and some are not so good. Before purchasing an antispyware tool, you should know a few things about the software in question to ensure you are not being taken advantage of.

First, let's take a look at just what spyware is or isn't. Spyware is a hidden software program, usually implanted onto your computer without your express consent or knowledge. The program is used to track your browsing and shopping habits in order for companies to "better understand" how to effectively target consumers. Spyware is, without doubt, one of the most unethical things to happen in the business world since the subliminal advertising scandal in the 1950's.

The National Cyber Security Alliance states that spyware infects more than 90% of home PCs, making it one of the biggest security problems on the Internet. One recent survey shows that spyware isn't just a home computer problem either; Spyware is also finding its way onto corporate computer networks as well. Given the extent of the problem, it is obvious that good antispyware tools are in big demand now.

Spyware is usually planted on your computer when you download one of the many "free" things available on the Internet, such as free games or music. Some symptoms of a spyware infection include hijacked homepages, pop-up advertisements you can't seem to get rid of, and an unusually slow computer. Some spyware, though, leaves no indication that it is even there, quietly collecting data on your habits and reporting them to some third party without your knowledge. Sometimes, spyware is virtually impossible to detect or remove without the use of a good antispyware software program.

Because of the rise in spyware activity, antispyware programs are in high demand these days, but not all of them are created equal. Some programs are even worse than the spyware itself, implanting their own spyware as they remove other. Other antispyware programs simply don't detect the latest spyware programs, and so are totally worthless.

There are a few good antispyware programs on the market, though, and with some due diligence, you should be able to get a quality product at a good price. Beware of free antispyware software, though, as it is most likely a program designed to replace one spyware program with another.
